The best way to upgrade your computer to the latest version of Windows is to do a clean install, so you can start afresh rather than bringing along unwanted programs or files you might have on your current setup. Luckily, doing a clean installation of Windows 10 is pretty simple. You just need your Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 license and a USB flash drive or writable DVD. You'll need at least 4GB of storage space on the flash drive or DVD, which will be completely rewritten.

As always, back up your computer before doing this clean installation, just in case. One note about the product key you can use to activate Windows 10: Microsoft now allows you to use your Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 key (including OEM keys) to get the free. To find your Windows product key, use a free utility like to recover it. You'll need at least 3GB of storage space on the flash drive or DVD, which will be completely rewritten.
As always, back up your computer before doing this clean installation, just in case. Download Microsoft's Windows 10 media creation tool from.
Run MediaCreationTool.exe and select 'Create installation media for another PC'. Accept or change the installation options and click Next. Choose USB flash drive or ISO file (for burning to a DVD later) and click Next. Select the drive and click Next. Click Finish after the media creation tool creates the media for you. Restart your PC with the USB drive or DVD inserted.
Press any key to boot from the USB drive or DVD. Follow the prompts to set up Windows. This will include entering your Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 license key and agreeing to the Windows 10 license terms. If your current version of Windows starts up instead of getting the prompt to boot from the bootable USB drive or DVD you created, you might need to go into the computer's boot menu to let it boot from the media.
To do this, you'll have to press a key, such as F2 or F12, when the PC starts up. Check with your computer's manufacturer for the key or combination of keys you'll need to use. Important: If you're installing Windows 10 over another version of Windows, rather than installing it on an empty partition or clean hard drive, be sure to choose 'Change what to keep' in the installation wizard.
Select 'Nothing' in the Choose what to keep window. This will delete everything in the partition or drive and install Windows 10 from scratch. Once the setup is complete, you can enjoy customizing and using your fresh machine. Brent Says: This didn't work for me.
I tried to do a clean install on a Windows 7 laptop that I didn't even have the Windows 10 'upgrade now' notification as I just turned it on after letting it sit for a couple years. I created a DVD with the iso download option using a different PC.
I then booted from the DVD and said to install Windows 10. When it got to the point where it asked for the key, I input my Windows 7 key for that laptop. Thought it was odd but it allowed me to activate later so I opted for that. Got Windows 10 installed no problem and used it for a bit but, when I went to activate it, same message about the key being no good. I called Microsoft and was told that in order for the key to be 'good' from a Windows 7 computer that Windows 10 has to first be installed and asked if I did that. I said 'nope, I did the clean install option'. They said I have two options.
Buy Windows 10 or reload Windows 7 then do the Windows 10 upgrade and THEN I could do the DVD if I wanted to. That's a bit aggravating to waste that much time and also makes it pointless to have a 'clean install' iso download because you can't really use it?!?! This makes no sense and doesn't follow what you mention above where a person can just input their Win 7 key when asked. Tried that and no joy. I'm not sure if something changed with Microsoft's policy or what but don't expect to be able to do a clean install of Windows 10 on a Windows 7/8.1 machine that you never put Windows 10 over the top of Windows 7/8.1! If there is a way to do it, please let me know because I need to do another PC and would prefer to do a true clean install if possible.
Have you previously upgraded to Windows 10? Once you do that you can clean install as the Microsoft activation servers will 'know' your computer and allow activation of Windows 10. If you have never had it before it will not activate if you try to do a clean install, unless you buy a Windows 10 license code.
Free Update expires 7/29/16 so if you are going to do it, do it soon. Warranty will not be a problem and HP Support Assistant has a version that works in Windows 10 just fine.
For computers that came with Windows 8 or 8.1, Windows 10 generally installs all the drivers. A few might have to be updated through Windows Update. The glaring exception is Intel/nVidia switchable graphics which does not function well under Windows 10 but I don't think you have that hardware.
Well Windows 10 will install working, but generic drivers on the first pass and then better drivers through Update in some cases. I like to be sure my computers are running the best available drivers so I install the manufacturer drivers.
This is probably overkill. We are overthinking this.
How did your Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 8.1 work? If everything was working in that instance no reason to think a clean install will be any different. I would at least put the network drivers and HP Support Assistant onthe thumb drive. If for some unlikely reason you do not have Internet access afte the install, you can then at least get on the internet and use HPSA to find and install any other drivers and apps that are needed but missing.
2:59 If you have a Windows 7 or 8 computer, you have to to Windows 10 for free. While your data, apps and most of your system settings will remain intact, upgrading tends to adversely affect performance. This post will show you how to change that and get a clean install of Windows 10 onto your computer.
This is possible both after you've already upgraded to Windows 10 and before, when your computer still runs Windows 7 or 8. Important note: You can't get a fresh system install without all of your apps and possibly some personal data being erased, so make sure to back up all of your important information before you begin this process. Alternatively, you can choose to retain your personal files (such as those in the Desktop and Documents folders) which will keep the files in your profile intact. Note that the last option, Restore factory settings, is only available in certain machines and will reinstall the original Windows system that was on your computer when you bought it. You don't want to choose this option, unless your computer originally came with Windows 10. Only choose to clean the drive if you intend to give away or sell the computer after the reset. Screenshot by Dong Ngo/CNET Step 5: You will be presented with the option to Just remove my files or to Remove files and clean the drive. Basically, if you intend to keep the computer for yourself, pick the first option.
If you intend to give it away or sell it after the reset, choose the second option, which will take much longer to complete. After choosing an option, click on the Reset button and that's it.
The computer will restart and after somewhere between 10 minutes to half an hour, or maybe longer depending on the speed of the machine, you will have yourself a computer with Windows 10 freshly installed. Note that resetting your machine in this way means you'll lose the option to. For Windows 7/8 machines If your computer still runs Windows 7 or 8, you want to avoid upgrading using Windows Update. Instead make yourself a Windows 10 installation disc. I prefer using a USB flash drive (thumb drive) since it works with all computers, including those without an optical drive. You'll need a drive that's 3GB or larger.
Here are the steps. Step 1: Go to and click on to get the latest media creation tool. Choose the language, edition and architecture for Windows 10. Screensot by Dong Ngo/CNET Step 3: In this step, you select the Language, Edition and Architecture for Windows 10, then click Next.
Note that the N version of Windows 10 is for some European countries and will not include Windows Media Player. If you choose to make the installation media for both 32-and 64-bit Windows, you will need a thumb drive that has at least 6GB of storage space. If you intend to install Windows 10 on the current computer, you can check the Use the recommended options for this computer box. Pick the Thumb drive to use as the installation media. Screenshot by Dong Ngo/CNET Step 5: Insert the flash drive into the computer's USB port and click Next. After the drive is selected the tool will start downloading Windows 10. Depending on the speed of your internet connection, the download can take anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours.
Once the download is done, the tool will takes another few minutes to turn the flash drive into Windows 10 installation media. You then can use this flash drive to upgrade or install Windows on any computer. Screenshot by Dong Ngo/CNET Step 8: In the next step, you can choose to keep Nothing (so that you'll have a truly fresh Windows 10 install), Keep personal files only (your documents, music, photos and so on will remain intact) or Keep personal files, apps or Windows settings (you will not have a clean installation of Windows 10).
After that click Next. Follow the rest of the installation and once it's done, if you have pick the option to keep nothing or just personal files, you will have yourself a clean installation of Windows 10 on your machine. For a custom-build computer (advanced users) If you've built your own computer, you can install Windows 10 on it using the flash-drive creation method in the section above. Choose to boot the computer from the flash drive and the installation process will start.

Note that this method is quite involved, though self-explanatory, so make sure you know what you're doing (or are willing to learn a few new things). Also note that installing Windows 10 fresh on a computer by booting from the installation media will require you to buy a new Windows 10 license. If you do this before July 29, you can use a Windows 7 or 8 license to activate Windows 10.
I have a HP ENVY Touchsmart Sleek book laptop. Model M6-K125dx which had Windows 8.1 OEM version installed. I do not have any DVD drive so everything must be by USB at the moment. I cleaned out most of all thejunk and made copies of my data on the HD prior to updating to Windows 10. My plan was to install Windows10 and get it registered with Microsoft then to make a HD backup image of thesystem and the partitions.
Made sure I had everything running prior to making the image backup using Win10 backup. This went as according to plan without any issues and used a 32gig USB 3 thumb drive which used about 24 gig which included the OLDWindows directory. After I made the HD image Idownloaded the MS Media Creator Tool and ran it and selected I wanted to make a Win10 copy for another computer. I used a 8 gig USB thumb drive for that. After the copy was properly installedon the 8 gig drive I rebooted and hit ESC to access the thumb drive. It loaded and I was able to reformattedthe whole 650gig HD for my clean install. No problems installing andwhen it was online it acquired the proper MS code saying it was an active copy.
Just thought you want to hearabout OEM laptops and how to get your clean install. It's always nice when things work out as planned. So many folks are having issues and all I can think is that their Windows 7 or 8 was having issues before they installed Windows 10 and now they surfaced. I always believed after being in computers since late 1970's a clean install is worth the effort and time even if you have to reinstall your additional software. Good Luck All.Yes, good job!
It's amazing (or not, considering how not very well Microsoft communicated on this) how many posts I see of people who took a perfectly well activated Win 7/7 SP1 or Win 8/8.1 system and jumped right into a clean install of Win10, not realizing 1) they should have backed up their data for restore and been prepared to reinstall all their programs with license keys and 2) had no idea that you have to do the textbook UPGRADE to Win 10 first and confirm activation BEFORE doing the clean install (those without retail licenses of Win 10 in hand). You don't know what you don't know, I guess, and I put that down to poor communication (for many) on Microsoft's part. After my first Windows 10 install above went so well I decided to upgrade my Acer Aspire One that has a 32bit, 1.3Ghz processor and 1 Gig of Ram. All I can say is amazing.
This little Netbook has been revitalized and is running and changing screens faster than with Windows 7. I have been told the Windows 10 code is really designed for smaller more compact units.

Hi: Quick summary is that my PC randomly freezes (no BSOD) or sometimes shows BSOD. A couple of times, this happened while watching a video or playing a game, in which case the speaker got stuck on a repeated sound that went away upon hard boot. When this happens, I cannot do anything but a hard reboot. I looked at the forum. Some suggested to do system check using sfc and dism commands. I did that but this happened again.
The I saw a note on the forum that suggested I pack the MEMORY.DMP, MSINFO and also any MINIDUMP files I did that and have uploaded to the following link. As mentioned in the title, I did a clean install. I was on Windows 7. Did an upgrade but that had some strange problem of going super slow at logon time to be unusable. So I did a clean install.
The BSOD or freeze does not seem to happen at any particular time. It happens sometimes soon after restart. Sometimes several hours later. It has not frozen so far while I made the zip file, uploaded and wrote this note.

Hi: I have been slowly trying the above steps waiting to see how the system behaves over a few days. So far I have updated both my intel adapter driver - wired and wifi to latest for windows 10. At first things worked fine for a couple days. I then noticed some pattern 1) I have not seen the DRIVERPOWERSTATEFAILURE BSOD on my account, that has admin priveleges.
But I did see this a few times already for my son's account, which is a regular windows account 2) On my account, I have seen seen the OS just freeze. Atleast once maybe twice.
I remember I was moving my mouse and it moved a bit and then just got stuck. Had to do a hard reboot 3) I have turned hibernation/sleep off on my PC. I will now do the next suggested steps of removing avast and see what happens. Will keep reporting. Looks like I might have finally got this resolved.
Have been waiting for a couple weeks after I made my final change to make sure this does not happen again. After all the options to upgrade drivers did not bear result, I tried upgrading the BIOS. I read a note somewhere for another HP Elite that a similar problem was resolved. I went to HP site and found the latest BIOS for my version of HP machine. It was J01 v02.28.
I followed instruction to upgrade the BIOS. So far, since the BIOS upgrade, my system has not crashed or hung. I recall it might have happened once, but certainly not as often as it used it. Earlier, my system would not come out of sleep mode. Now it is fine. Fingers crossed.
If I do not send any further update, then it would mean my PC is going fine with this BIOS upgrade. No more freeze or Blue screen.
